Conservation agriculture

Demonstration plots at partner schools

A teaching plot on school grounds, run by students through a full season. The harvest goes to the school kitchen, and the measurements go into their coursework.

Planned

Schools already have land, students and a reason to grow food. What they usually lack is a plot run as a proper experiment.

The plan

Two matched beds on school grounds, one conventional and one under conservation practice, measured by the students themselves across a season.

Why it is worth doing

Students take the practice home. In every training group we run, the participants who adopt fastest are the ones who saw the practice work somewhere before we arrived.

Other work under this pillar

  • Two trainees using hoes to open planting furrows along a line of string while other participants watch from the edge of the plot.

Conservation agriculture training for smallholder farmers

A practical training series on better agricultural practice: ridging, spacing, mulching and compost. Farmers opened the furrows themselves on the demonstration plot rather than watching someone else do it.
